Immigration citizenship, voter registration drives set

.
U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) said the naturalization efforts are consistent with the best of America.

"What would be more 'apple pie' than helping people become citizens of the United States of America?" she asked.

Schakowsky advised immigrants not to delay in becoming U.S. citizens because fees are likely to increase and the federal government is weighing changes that could make the naturalization exam more difficult. More from The Tribune.......

Homeowners Protest Tax Increase

.
Homeowners Protest Property Tax Increases

cbs2chicago.com--Hundreds of Chicago homeowners are protesting the latest round of property tax increases, saying their most recent reassessment notices will tax them right out of their homes.

The property owners who were protesting are from Lakeview Township, a property taxing district that includes much of the North Side from Lincoln Park up to Rogers Park.

They spoke out Tuesday night at a meeting at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. The property owners say they want lawmakers to extend a 7 percent cap on assessment increases that was put in place a few years ago.

County Board postpones Stroger decision

.
AP— Members of the Cook County Board said Tuesday they would wait until July to learn the political fate of President John Stroger, who hasn't been seen or heard from publicly since suffering a stroke three months ago.
The political rhetoric has heated up as time has passed with little information provided about Stroger's condition and potential replacements jockeying for his job.

"July is just around the corner," said Commissioner Bobbie Steele, who has expressed interest in replacing Stroger should he choose to step aside. "We waited this long." More

Chicagoans could have a say in Mexican election

.
Medill via Chi Town --Daily-Pilsen resident Raul Ross has been working to get Mexican citizens in the United States the right to vote in Mexico's elections since the 1980s.
After several disappointing elections, this year Ross, who moved to Pilsen from Veracruz, Mexico, in 1986, was finally able to cast an absentee ballot, thanks to legislation passed in Mexico in 2005.
"[Voting] is saying we haven't broken with our country," said Ross, whose parents, two brothers and sister still live in Mexico.
But many other Mexican citizens in Chicago don't seem to share Ross' interest in the election.
Although the July 2 presidential election is the first in which citizens abroad will be able to vote, only 4,000 absentee ballots have been cast from the Chicago area -- and the deadline for doing so was January 15. More....

"If I knew, I probably wouldn't tell you......"

.
'Veil of secrecy' surrounds Stroger
Daily Southtown--Cook County Board President John Stroger apparently remained hospitalized Wednesday, a week after being rushed from his downtown condo with an infection.
Details of Stroger's condition are sketchier than ever, as his son, Chicago Ald. Todd Stroger (8th), pushed through a crowd of reporters and refused to provide details as he left a city council budget committee hearing Wednesday morning.
Asked when his father would be released, Stroger said, "If I knew, I probably wouldn't tell you, but I don't know."

The Gloves Come Off

.
Pols from West, South sides set to battle over right to succeed Stroger

Daily Southtown-Steele, a West Sider, appeared alongside longtime political ally state Sen. Rickey Hendon (D-5th), who challenged the authority of South Side Chicago Ald. Bill Beavers (7th). Beavers stepped into the fray last week by announcing that he was taking over as Stroger family spokesman, replacing the president's son, Ald. Todd Stroger (8th).

"I spoke with Todd Stroger, who remains, in my opinion, the only official spokesman for his father and the family," Hendon said.

Beavers criticized Steele last week when news accounts said she and Commissioner Larry Suffredin might try to rush through a measure that would force Stroger from power. Hendon said Beavers risks fracturing the city's black politicians.

"If the African-American community ends up divided because the most qualified person ... happens to live on the West Side, it's personally appalling to me," said Hendon, who works for the county board of review. "We must be united." More...

Life Is Precious
It has been a long while since I last posted something here. To those who seem to believe that the world of blogs is the only way life happens that would mean I have been doing nothing. Of course that is not the case. We have been busy working on getting our summer plans together, holding our monthly meetings and of course closely following the events that are shaping up our November ticket.
